Many of us journalists with actual degrees in journalism and communications feel as if our jobs are being taken away by a geek with internet access. This theory is made a reality by various websites having the ability to sustain as much daily hits and unique users as mainstream media outlets; therefore making it hard to determine the credibility of the reporting and posts listed. The end result is amateur “industry” representatives taking advantage of the unsigned talent; payola.

Payola is when a person of influence i.e. a DJ or journalist takes money for “promoting” something as if it is their genuine belief. It is simply a paid advertisement without telling the public it is an advertisement. In short, payola is nothing new to Hip Hop, but with Twitter and the Internet being widely used, it is becoming more accessible than ever. Many website owners, promoters, bloggers and DJs have a much easier avenue to reach their prey; an unsigned artist.

Why is payola a bad thing? It is because you, the public, trust the opinion of a certain DJ/journalist/website. If they tell you something or someone is good for whatever reason, you should believe what they say. But if they really don’t feel that way and are just getting a paycheck, where is the credibility? Then you, the consumer wonder why there isn’t any “good music” out.

The following is an example of a Payola machine sent out to random unsigned acts a few days ago. Both parties deny being the headmaster behind the project.

Mixtape is set to release early 2nd Quarter!

DJ Envy denied knowing anything about the project via Twitter . Once Paysos got word he issued the following statement via email, “have some disappointing news. Unfortunately someone lied to DJ ENVY and told him I was charging people $750 to get on the mixtape. He was upset and thought I was ripping people off and without speaking to me lied and said he does not know me. I am very insulted and disgusted; I put together an opportunity for indie artist and a good situation for everyone involved. Due to this, I am no longer doing this project in conjunction with him and will no longer do business with him. As an artist myself, to believe that I did business with this man and he blatantly try to demean my reputation. I do good business, always have always will, and I’m anti a lot of attitudes in the music industry thus the motivation for the project and the cross promotion that is guaranteed by each individual artist and 4daluvofmoney Inc.’s promotion. We will be doing this project with a DJ that genuinely has respect for new talent and not look at us as merely a quick come up. Have a Blessed Day, and I will keep your email and contact you with any promotional opportunities I provide or that I come across. Men Lie, Women Lie, Facts don’t. I apologize for any confusion. I wish you much success in this foul game we playing in!”

Since then, DJ Envy’s management has told thefoxxfiles.com, “Envy hosted a mixtape for him about a year or two ago. Then we look online and see he’s calling himself A&R of Envy’s unsigned mixtape coming out & he’s trying to charge artist $750 to get on it, when Envy had no knowledge of this. Now he’s been calling all day apologizing.”

DJ Envy’s management went further to say directly to Paysos, “When I spoke to u last week, our conversation (if u wanna call it that) lasted 15 seconds. You told me ya name, asked if the price was still for a mixtape hosting, and said that you’d be in touch. At no point did we talk about u gettin ya artist up for the tape or any other details. We don’t do unsigned artist tapes for other people and if I knew that ya first volume was like that, we would have never signed off on that. You just went about it wrong my dude. You didn’t get anyone’s approval.”

They person in reference is Rico Paysos (who denies apologizing), rapper and CEO of 4daluvofmoney Inc. Paysos sells himself completely behind the original mixtape he did with DJ Envy [Envy Drop for Rico Paysos].

Whoever is at fault, the problem is some DJs don’t listen to the music before their label is on the project. Paysos claims that many DJs don’t ask to hear the music, “You simply tell them Yo, I need drops, give me $1500, they don’t ask to hear the music.”

Of course there is nothing wrong with DJs taking money from anyone to be a part of their compilation. It is not until they promote the music to you as a consumer that it should be labeled as such because in reality it is still a paid advertisement.

To unsigned artists:

Never pay to be on ANYONE’s mixtape and/or website. If your talent is that good, they will come to you. If at any time you do decide to pay for placement ask the following questions:

a. Where are the distribution lists/hit counts (for websites)?

b. Who will see this?

So I was picking out some fresh threads from "The Closet" for my latest fashion escapade and you know me I'm thinking European, you know 3/4 slide boots that come above the ankle, Italian tailored pants, and a snazzy black top to match the stereo profile on my billboard (The design on the back of my head). Then it happens, I come across an old photo album I've had for many years. This album contains pictures of every girl I've ever dated since the 7th grade, a record if I may, all my old flames sorted and filed for a time such as this one. In going down memory lane I was forced to examine that which lies deep in the recesses of our hearts... love. It caused me to want to address very common trends that men and women seem to be challenged with daily, a trend we should not follow but often find that it is all too familiar territory. I'm speaking to the good guys who finish last, the women who know what they want in love but often choose the alternative to their desires, the emotionally abused, the serial daters, the emotional introverts who can never express their love when needed; I'm talking to a society of complacency when it comes to love. Oh yes! The spirit is moving in me today people; Cupid whispered a song into my heart, and Venus a thought in my mind. I can't contain it, I won't, it must be preached, and I mean preached! There's time a mirror in "The Closet" and it's time to examine ourselves...

What women want...?

Ladies, my beautiful, authentic, well assorted, successful, backbones of civilization; my mothers, sisters, cousins etc., I love you all but oh how the confusion hangs over your heads! Not all but a good amount of you. After doing my homework (because I have to be careful not to talk out my ass on this one) I find that the perception of love and relationships are formed at the age of five. The perfect wedding, the perfect gown, the perfect husband, all seemingly fine when life is perfect. Too many times have I heard women express their desires when it comes to love. A man/women (I'm politically correct) to treat them right, to build with, to laugh with, to cry with, to take care of, or for the more submissive types, to take care of them. This is all fine and I agree, these are key components to a happy relationship after god lays the foundation (I'm a Christian remember?). You deserve it, you have earned that right (some of you), and so why is it that you find yourself in relationships that are far less than what you have asked? Or is it that it is not what you have asked but you have received? How do we know a good gift if it's wrapped? Beautiful wrapping, a nice ribbon stitched from cloth imported from India, simply marvelous. Then you open the box and you find that it is empty, the gift that you have been waiting for is nothing more than a hoax. Shaped, molded, and transformed, women know what they want, they know if they are going to sleep with a guy on sight, they know if a man will just be a friend from the first conversation, women are no fools, they know what they want.

What women settle for?

If this does not pertain to you then by no means take offense! You ever notice that certain derogatory comments are now the latest fad? "My Nigga" is the new "My friend", "Bitch" is the new "Diva", whaaaaaat? A pretty girl walks down the street and a nice, well dressed, well versed man chooses to address her for nothing more than to let her know how blessed in beauty she is. He musters up the courage, steps forward, and says "Hello, I don't mean to bother you but I must say, you look ravishing", and yes some of us do talk like that. She stops, smiles, says "Thank you" and keeps it moving. Later she has a discussion with her friend about how nice this guy was and how she exchanged numbers with him, etc. We are not examining this woman, but we are examining the friend, just as beautiful, successful, but she is bitter. Her history of bad relationships stems from her non-existent father, who not only abused her love but the love of her mother. A string of disappointments have led her to become a serial dater, bouncing from one bad relationship to another. We all know how that goes... I've noticed that many women settle for the glitter without checking to see if it's gold. A man can say he loves you all day long but it is the action which speaks volumes. A good man strives on any level in his life; he has values, morals, and god more than he has excuses, complaints, and pitfalls. Yet because he can some how maneuver through a conversation, and bed (let's be real), his cash flow is right and is good looking, he prevails. Don't get me wrong, Fortune is no hater, I am ranked up with the best of them but I have to give insight. In part 2 we will examine this man... Everything I've stated makes sense right? So why allow yourselves to be degraded, down played, and deceived? Why cling to relationships for the sex? The money? The fact that you feel this is the only man that will ever love you? Why seek comfort in a person who chooses to use your love as a weapon rather than a tool for empowerment? Laziness? Or the fear of trying which is displayed in your whole life? Why do some women settle for a loveless, godless, and empty man? I am asking because it hurts to watch my sisters hurt for no reason other than the wrong decision. What are the criteria in which you base your judgment upon? I ask not because I want to know, I'm not choosing your mate, I ask because in order for you to empower yourself and begin a self-love healing process, you must vocalize that which is in need of change. Good men are not hard to find, we pass you by everyday like ships in the night. The problem is your staring at the yacht when your love could be a dingy...

Ask yourself these questions, answer them, and then share it with me so that I may spread it to others. This blog is not targeted towards anyone; it is an opinion, an observation as my other posts are. I only ask for your feedback, help to shed light on this topic... Speak on it...

Jay-Z Covers Da Vibe Magazine (THE OFFICIAL EXCLUSIVE)

The KING of Hip-Hop has graced the cover of Paris’ dopest magazine Da Vibe (@DaVibeMagParis) showing why this French periodical is the freshest on the scene. In his patented Jay-Z stance, Hov stands confidently as our nation’s flag stripes glide across his chest. In speaking with the Paris Princess herself, Eva (@EvaParis), I was able to get the backdrop of how the Hip-Hop legend came to feature on this cover.

It all starts with Da Vibe Magazine’s ultra talented graphic designer receiving a label picture from the press department and Atlantic Record’s Vice President of International Marketing in New York, David Miller. Eva being the bridge between the two, showed the cover to Miller, who then sent it to Jay-Z. When Jay-Z saw what had been done with the picture, he fell in love with it and had it posted to his site. I asked the Paris Princess how she felt about having Jay-Z back the magazine cover and she simply responded:

“We feel great about it! As soon as it went on Jay’s website, it went all over the blogs internationally. It’s a great buzz, even if we had no problem with getting all the well known artist we want; it’s a plus and a good thing for credibility if Jay-Z recognizes it… Real recognizes real”

Had it not been for Da Vibe Magazine, Eva, or David Miller, the world would have missed out on a dope magazine cover. The world thanks you and we cannot wait to hear and see more from you.

Is it funky? Fresh? Fly? Dope? Hot? No! Haute? Fire (pronounced Fiya!)? Fab? I could go on and on but to be quite honest there is no exact word, whether it is slang or proper, Webster or Webster Hall terminology, no regular word can describe the new school revolution that is Samantha Black. The world has not seen fashion this extraordinary since Versace himself graced us during his time. You can’t get quality like this form just any ol’ tailor shop or designer! If it isn’t Sammy B. then it just isn’t hot. Point blank, this girl has what those who claim to be different, special, and unique have been searching for. Samantha Black, Sammy B. is what they call her, is FAB, not Sex in the City fab, not Queer Eye fab, not Project Runway or A.N.T.M. fab, this girls is Notty Roxstaw, top of the line F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. Let’s break it down…

F- Fashion forward with her well designed eclectic line of ready-to-wear clothing.

A- A must have for the summer and fall season. Better yet, for your wardrobe period! (Kind of like red pumps, feel me?).

Walk in her shoes…

Samantha Black was born in the Boogie-Down Bronx on Sept 2, 1983. Born to West-Indian parents, Samantha is the first of this generation born in the states. Raised in New York, Samantha took art lessons at the Jamaica arts center in Queens, NY. At the age of eleven she moved to the suburbs of Connecticut to the town of Fairfield. Living in Connecticut is where Samantha expanded her artistic abilities, taking as many art classes as possible and on the weekend private art lessons. Once she reached high school she began training it to the city, where she took art classes at Parsons School of design. As the end of her high school career approached Samantha wondered how art would fit into her life as far as a career was concerned. It was recommended to Samantha that she looks into fashion design as a career, seeing as sewing was a hobby of hers and all of her notebooks were covered in doodles of fashion figures. So the summer before her senior year of high school, she spent the summer in Brooklyn, NY at Pratt Institutes Pre-College program in the fashion department. After that summer, Samantha knew that fashion was where her passion was for sure and that Pratt is where she wanted to study.

Four years later…

Samantha Black, the Designer of Sammy B. Designs, graduated from the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 2005 with a BFA in fashion design. While in school she interned for Jill Stuart and Michael Kors, after graduating Samantha moved to London for several months where she worked for Alexander McQueen in his design studio. Now at age 26, the designer takes bits and pieces of inspiration from everywhere and everything as well as the designers she’s been able to work for. She then combines that with her own personal style, personality and flavor, there by producing the line of Sammy B. Designs. Her goal is to compliment those with style and to enhance the style of others. With a wide range of looks and separates she hopes to appeal to the masses, but mainly females like herself, Tomboys in Pumps!

Going forward let it be our sole duty as fashionistas to seek out and help grow the business of designers like Samantha Black. She is three dimensionally hot! A Songstress Defined

“The sunlight shines faithful every day for you.” I took this line from Fatty Koo’s “Chills” and I apply it to this article, The Songstress, the incomparable Nedelka Prescod, a talent to be reckoned with, a faith that like our own can be shaken but never broken. I bring to you triumph and the definition of strength wrapped up in a voice reminiscent of the greats, Patti Labelle, Etta James, Billy Holiday, Whitney Houston, and to be more current Jazmine Sullivan. Have you ever had your soul infiltrated and pierced right at the most vulnerable spot? Yeah, it’s that serious, she’s that serious, and I am more than proud to introduce Nedelka to you faithful rock star advocates. Do not be fooled by the overflow of carbon copy “vocalist” that you hear on the radio today. I dare not take away from what they do, but in the Disco Jones circle of friends, there is a hidden oasis of underground talent that would easily put the carbon copies back on the shelf of record label machines. As a rock star nation, it is only right that we call for real music, real entertainment, for real, let’s bring back the live bands and the singer/musician who can tantalize and titillate our senses through song. After all, soul music is for the soul right? Rhythm and blues is supposed to tell the tall tales of the current happenings in our lives. With that said, raise the curtains; focus the spotlight, the songstress Nedelka has arrived. The Disco Jones Experience certifies her as platinum plus Notty Roxstaw as she helps us understand and define what it takes to be a songstress.

Talking to the songstress…

What is the difference between soul music and Rhythm & Blues?

Nedelka: “Soul music tells us where it comes from versus R&B which tells us how it should be done. My understanding of soul music is that it is an authentic expression unique to the soul it resonates from and can't actually be classified other than by the fact that it touches that which it is called.”

Define your type of music

Nedelka: “Indefinable, yet personal to the one who receives it.”

Who has helped in shaping and creating that which is Nedelka?

Nedelka: “My Daddy, my high school music teacher, Anna Ext, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Rachelle Ferrell, Kim Burrell, Ledisi, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Bobby McFerrin.”

As a woman in the music industry, do you find it difficult to compete in a male dominated world?

Nedelka: “No. I'm not in a competition, male or female, If God is infinite, then what's for me is for me and what's for you is for you.”

What has kept Nedelka as a songstress in her own class, rather than be associated with regular artist?

Nedelka: “The very fact that it came through me, just as much as their art is separated from mine.”

Can you predict the longevity in your career?

Nedelka: “I actually wouldn't call it a career but a lifestyle... more music... more practice time... more writing... more focused teaching time... more focused quality time alone with The Divine Source of all creation, being freed up to allow the highest expression and clarity of the most soul touching music to come through me that I've ever felt.”

Who are your top 3 artists that are currently out? Why?

Nedelka: “J. Moss, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele... their standard of vocal expression is inspiring and their albums are complete.”

When you come up with your songs what are the ingredients you use to make a hit?

Nedelka: “Interesting question... I don't write to make a hit... I tend to write through situations, needed to talk to someone, but only trusted God and a journal. I experienced something that made me think, and then there are times when entire songs are just divinely giving... Again, it is often triggered by an experience or a revelation.”

What does it take to be a songstress?

Nedelka: “I just had to look up the definition for "songstress". Another interesting question because I never used that kind of language towards myself. My Dad introduced me to music and I hung with him through his music lessons and gigs... He was my junior high school music teacher, but that doesn't make someone a "songstress"... if I think about it, the time I felt something I sang or wrote was in response to life. Maybe a "songstress" is someone that has experienced life in a way that made her express from a place she previously couldn't until a new doorway was opened into her soul... She was freed up because she had to let go of what was holding her back... pain. "Songstress" always sounded grown to me. That's what I would call Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald.”

As an independent woman in entertainment, how important is it for the community to support artists who are not considered mainstream?

Nedelka: “Whether a person considers themselves mainstream or underground you can't be heard unless someone is listening. I had a conversation with a friend of mine this morning and he told me he believed the role of an artist is to bring beauty into the world. I choose to add that the artist also brings healing. More and more I believe that God's got it all covered... so another way to look at this thing is that we are providing a service to the community. It's a cooperative relationship; biblically noted that those who tended to the spiritual needs of the community were cared for through the responsible applications of the funds raised through the tithing of the community. just like every other person I want to experience the abundance of God's grace and mercy but I am also mindful of the responsibility I have to the community not just because I want them to buy my product but because my purpose in life is to serve in the edification of the community. Of course I am deeply grateful when the community responds back with financial and other support.”

Blown away…

I am touched, moved in ways that the ocean itself couldn’t fathom. So much soul, so much passion, so much love for her artistry. Where has such a passion been all these years? Why have we allowed ourselves to fall victim to bubble gum raps and whisper singers? How do we move forward people, knowing that there is a pool of talent that has not yet been recognized? I raise these questions to say: WAKE UP, I say this with the same intensity Lawrence Fishburne did in my all time favorite Spike Lee joint ‘School Dayz”. Nedelka Prescod, or excuse me, NEDELKA as she goes by is seemingly one of the lost arks of artist that the world has yet to experience. Her words are moving, her music is inspiring, and this interview was my honor. As she exits this stage and enters on to a new one, I close the curtain and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience a Songstress Defined.

Bobby G. hails from Philadelphia and embodies the soul of the city and the musical intuition of his mentors/influences. Classically trained in piano, since the age of 9, by world renowned Juilliard teacher, Alicia Jonas up until 2001 as well as a strong technique in saxophone followed up by a weird obsession with African drums, Bobby G. has proven to be a musical force to be reckoned with. Bobby G. brings much to the industry, but he’d rather let the music speak for itself.

The Disco Jones Experience hails from New York, NY, where, just like his city, he never sleeps. The other half of The Klassikz duo, he brings a dance/electronica type feel to the team. His writing abilities not only allow The Klassikz to be great producers but great songwriters as well. Constantly on the scene, The Disco Jones Experience fuses his musical abilities along with his entrepreneurial abilities and custom made swagger to help propel The Klassikz to new and heightened levels.

The Klassikz are not your average production team. They’re roots run deep and their business savvy runs deeper. Keep an eye out for this team, because the more knowledge they gain, the more their skills are honed, the bigger the threat they become.
